The Magic of Number 3 in Marketing

Wednesday, July 13, 2011

"IIPM Prof Rajita Chaudhuri on ‘The Magic of Number 3 in Marketing’ The slower-than-expected growth in the country's factory output may sennd markets in a tizzy every now and then. But, management graduates passing out of premier B-schools are betting big on manufacturing. Volatility in the global financial markets is pushing fresh graduates to brick and mortar industries.

An increasing number of students passing out from the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are choosing careers in manufacturing over traditional finance roles post-slowdown. On an average, 10% more students across IIMs have taken up jobs in core sectors this year as compared to previous years. This is likely to go up further over the next three years, say experts.

DICTATORSHIP OF THE SYCOPHANTS

[June, 2011]

The modern day Jalianwala Bagh at Ramlila Grounds shows the demonic attitude of the government, the weak spine of the opposition and the hypocrisy of the media towards Bharat!

My question is, are we living in a democracy or in a shamelessly unapologetic dictatorial regime? Has the government finally lost it totally? Or do they believe that the people of the country are so foolish that they will quietly accept any amount of dictatorship and vote them to power again in 2014? Is there absolutely no learning from DMK’s huge loss in Tamil Nadu where it virtually controlled the media and yet people kicked them out? What happened on June 4th, 2011, is an absolute blot on the Indian democracy.........................

MBA Mafia

Management education as a term has been defined, redefined and today it is being ill-defined. It's common knowledge that management education can be imparted after doing graduation in any stream, be it history, geography, economics, biology, engineering etc. The most important aspect of the above fact is that management is not that well developed a stream for which one has to spend years of education (5 years or more). What I mean is if one wants to do Masters in Geography, he necessary has to have a bachelors Degree in Geography and the same is with physics, economics, and all other streams of higher education. This is so as all these streams are very well developed and therefore to understand a Masters level theory for micro biology for example requires a perfect understanding of all the  graduation level theories of the same subject. All the other fields of post graduate studies are post graduate in nature because of the higher level of technicalities and theories in them.

What I am trying to drive towards is the non challengeable fact that management as a stream of studies is more hype than content. Infact, after a certain point its actually not possible to develop it any further.....................

COUNT YOUR CHICKENS BEFORE THEY HATCH'

Extracts from the Book :

If you think you can, you are right :

Just be passionate about what you think - is how the mgmt. guru Arindam Chaudhuri urges us to delve deeper and make headway into what the title of the book has in store for us.
They say “don’t count your chickens before they hatch”. They are correct. Every time you are about to sign a big contract in life, expect to meet with a fatal accident while getting out of the car on your way to signing the contract. In fact, every time you are about to start the greatest speech or concert of your life, expect to fall flat on the stage and break your nose. Or rather when your aircraft has landed safely don’t start thanking God, but expect to die due to a fall from the stairs while climbing down the aircraft. So what if you have written your exams to your utter satisfaction; don’t rejoice, but anticipate that your paper will get exchanged with that of the worst student of your class..................

FOR SALMAN KHURSHID, IT IS A BIG CHALLENGE AHEAD; AND I PERSONALLY LOOK FORWARD TO A REVOLUTIONARY COUPLE OF YEARS AHEAD!

July 15, 2011

"..............The only thing that we nowadays talk about is corruption. And the one and only solution for solving this issue of corruption is a functional judicial system. Corruption and greed are globally prevalent; yet these touch far less lives in the USA than in India simply because the American judicial system is functional while ours is dysfunctional. In America, they have ten times more judges per million people than in India; so there is a fear of immediate punishment – while in India, there is no such fear of punishment..............."

Encouraging The Devil’s Advocate
Prof. Shlomo Ben-Hur (Professor of Leadership, OB and Corporate Learning, IMD) advises how to Create an Environment where Employees Speaking out can lead to better decisions
Issue Date - 01/06/2011

The challenge facing executive teams in ensuring that sound decisions are made is simple: groupthink. Psychologist Irving Janis, who researched the subject extensively, defined groupthink as the systematic errors made by groups when taking collective decisions.

The three layers of groupthink
1. Key causes: Include group cohesion, directive leadership and ideological homogeneity.
2. Common symptomatic behaviours: Include overestimation of the capabilities of the group, being closed-minded and pressure for uniformity.
3. Consequent decision-making flaws: Include inadequate contingency planning, insufficient information and biased assessments of risk, cost-benefits and moral implications.

For Salman Khurshid, it is a big challenge ahead; and I personally look forward to a revolutionary couple of years ahead!

New Delhi, July 14, 2011 21:18
.............................to make the rule of criminals easy, the governments in India over the years have deliberately kept the judicial system in our country dysfunctional. It serves the purpose of the legal fraternity as well. Thanks to the years or decades that it takes to execute a case and to take it to its culmination, the legal fraternity invariably ends up making a windfall profit. And thanks to the absence of a time-bound justice delivery mechanism, making moolah is not at all a challenge for our legal fraternity, as they are quite adept at purposefully making cases hang on for years. The only thing that we nowadays talk about is corruption. And the one and only solution for solving this issue of corruption is a functional judicial system. Corruption and greed are globally prevalent; yet these touch far less lives in the USA than in India simply because the American judicial system is functional while ours is dysfunctional. We need a budget for the aam aadmi and not a budget that pleases the aam aadmi

January 28, 2011

I am almost one hundred percent sure when I write this that the budget, which our honourable finance minister is going to present before the Parliament next month, is going to be a hugely populist one. Although nothing different from other previous budgets – which were more of political rhetoric than anything else – this time, it is different. This time, it is more of a compulsion for the UPA, which is finding itself cornered with respect to untamable inflation on the one hand, and equally unbeatable corruption cases and scams on the other.

Even in stampedes, those are our poor who lose their lives

January 21, 2011

Sabarimala is considered one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations, so much so that it finds its place in the global list of top pilgrimage sites, sharing space with the Vatican and the Kumbh. Even Forbes Traveler features this destination among its list of the “World’s 10 most popular religious pilgrim centres”. Paradoxically, this pilgrimage destination that attracts around 60 million tourists (both domestic and foreign) annually, has failed to make the site safer for its pilgrims.

Passionate About India: Don’t see “Slumdog Millionaire”. It sucks!

January 25, 2009

".......................And I say all this not because I don’t know what is India. I know its poverty and the real statistics around it a little better than most others – especially the Indian film critics who have given “Slumdog…” an average of 4 to 4.5 stars! But the fact is that the film’s entire narration seems like the germination of a terribly sadistic and complex mind with the sole aim of satisfying the western idea of India – and its new found growth instincts at their cost - and it is done through a combination of illogical happenings in order to show everything in a disgustingly negative vein. Not that it doesn’t exist, but it surely doesn’t exist in this fictitious manner. While “Salaam Bombay” had realism, “Slumdog…” is just every scrap of dirt picked up from every corner and piled up together to try and hit back at the growing might of India. ......................"

IIPM Economy Review

Tuesday, December 18, 2007

The IIPM (The Indian Institute of Planning & Management) Think Tank, an independent, India-centric research body, is inspired by Dr. M.K. Chaudhuri’s vision of India as an economic powerhouse in the 21st century; a modern nation state where poverty becomes history and the underprivileged are not consigned to the dustbin of amnesia. The national presence (across seven nodes, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad) makes our understanding of the economy superior, where in many research fellows, visiting fellows, senior research associates, research associates, research assistants, program co-ordinators, IIPM faculty and etc. embark on research assignments and network with global intelligentsia. .....................
